PARIS, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- Flash floods that struck villages in southern French region of L'Aude on Sunday night, had killed 14 people while a person was still missing, the regional authorities said on Wednesday.

Originally, officials put the number of victims to 11.

In a statement, the prefecture of L'Aude said 74 people were injured in the worst flash floods in a century that devastated the southern French region.

Heavy downpour lasted a few hours in L'Aude from Sunday night to Monday morning, triggering unprecedented rise in water level. The villages of Conques-sur-Orbiel, Trebes and Villardonnel were the worst-hit zones.

680 rescuers have been deployed to help affected people in the flood-hit areas where 1,522 houses remained without electricity and drinking water was still cut in six villages, according to regional officials.
