NEW DELHI, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- At least seven people were killed and 20 others injured Saturday after a passenger bus carrying them skidded off road and fell into a pond in India's northeastern state of Assam, officials said.

The accident took place near Mukalmua in Nalbari district, about 63 km northwest of Dispur, the capital city of Assam.

"Today a passenger bus belonging to Assam State Transport Corporation skidded off road and fell into a pond in Adabari area here," a police official in Nalbari said. "Seven people were killed and 20 others injured in the accident."

Reports said driver of the bus lost control over vehicle and plunged into pond.

According to officials there were 50 people inside the bus at the time of accident.

"Seven bodies have been fished out from the pond and bus has been taken out with the help of crane," the official said. "Twenty people who were injured have been rushed to a nearby hospital and remaining ones were rescued safely."

Deadly road accidents are common in India, which are often caused due to overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving.

Officials say on an average over 400 deaths take place every day in India due to road accidents.
