YANGON, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- A liver symposium is underway in Myanmar's Yangon with experts and officials presenting papers on hepatitis B and C virus and liver disease, Myanmar News Agency reported Sunday.

The two-day Liver Symposium-2018, which began on Saturday, is jointly organized by National Hepatitis Control Program of the Myanmar Ministry of Health and Sports, Myanmar Liver Foundation and B.K. Kee Foundation as well as Myanmar Medical Association.

Permanent Secretary of the ministry Professor Dr. Thet Khaing Win told the symposium that medical practitioners in the country will be informed of the latest more effective treatment on liver disease.

He elaborated on vaccination against hepatitis-B for the new born in the country, saying that the vaccination was included in normal immunization program for children under one year old.

Hoping that the symposium would contribute to prevention, diagnosis, treatment and research on live disease, he urged partner organizations to cooperate in the national hepatitis control program.

Hepatitis-C treatment under the national hepatitis control program was initiated last year at some hospitals in Yangon, Mandalay and Nay Pyi Taw and the program is being extended to Myitkyina, Kachin state and Mawlamyine, Mon state this year.

Myanmar surgeons successfully conducted liver transplantation in 2004, registering a milestone in the country's medical field.
