CAPE TOWN, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- Former South African president and Nobel Peace Prize laureate FW de Klerk has been hospitalized in Cape Town, his foundation announced on Saturday.
FW de Klerk, 82, was hospitalized on Friday at the Cape Town Panorama Hospital with a condition known as pneumothorax - which is an abnormal collection of air in the pleural space between the lung and the chest wall, the foundation said.
"He underwent a successful procedure this morning and it is expected that he will be discharged from hospital some time next week," said the foundation.
As South Africa's last apartheid head of state, FW de Klerk and his government dismantled the apartheid system and introduced universal suffrage. He and Nelson Mandela, who later became South Africa's first black president, shared the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize.
