21 feared killed as helicopter crashes in W. Afghanistan

FARAH, Afghanistan, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- A helicopter crashed in the western Farah province on Wednesday morning and 21 people including a senior army commander aboard were feared dead, provincial police chief Fazal Hadi Shirzad said.

"The chopper with 21 people on board including the crew and passengers was flaying to the neighboring Herat province on Wednesday morning but due to fog and bad weather it hit a mountain and crashed," Shirzad told Xinhua.

All persons aboard including deputy commander of 207 Zafar Corps in the western region and Farid Bakhtiar, the head of provincial council of Farah province, were feared dead in the incident occurred in Anar Dara district, the official added.

Meantime, another official who declined to be identified said that all aboard the helicopter were killed in the incident.

However, the official avoided more details, saying investigation is underway. Defense Ministry has yet to make comment.

Previously in similar incident in mid September, an Afghan army helicopter crashed in Khak-e-Safid district of Farah province, killing five people aboard including two crew.
