TRIPOLI, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- The UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) on Wednesday welcomed the Libyan government's establishment of the Women's Empowerment and Support Unit.

"UNSMIL welcomes the Presidential Council's establishment of the Women's Empowerment and Support Unit and the appointment of Chairperson Lila Allafi and Deputy Hanan Alfakhakhri," the mission said in a statement.

The UNSMIL called on the Libyan government and the international community to "invest in and support the functions of this unit."

"This landmark development for Libyan women adds to the 18th anniversary celebrations of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on women, peace and security happening now around the world," the mission said.

The Women's Empowerment and Support Unit has been appointed based on Article 11 of the UN-sponsored Libyan political agreement, which was signed by the Libyan rivals later in 2015 in order to end the political division in the country.
