BUCHAREST, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- Sibiu Salami, a Romanian deli, will be promoted in Romania, Spain and Italy for three years, with a European grant of 1.5 million euros (1.7 million U.S. dollars), announced the Association of Sibiu Salami Producers on Wednesday.

The association also announced Nov. 1 would become "National Day of Sibiu Salami" starting this year.

Sibiu Salami is the only Romanian product of the processed meat category recognized in 2016 with the European quality distinction Protected Geographical Indication (PGI).

And the Association of Sibiu Salami Producers won the 1.5 million-euro EU grant in 2017.

"Sibiu Salami remains a super premium niche sausage in the minds of our consumers...the annual consumption is only four slices per capita in Romania," Carmen Gavrilescu, president of the association, told a press conference.

According to her, production in 2017 was 2,100 tonnes and they forecast 2,400 tonnes this year. "Our goal is to reach 3,000 tons in the next two years."

As for the National Day of Sibiu Salami on Nov.1, Gavrilescu explained that it's the time when INDAGRA, the most famous fair for agriculture in Romania, is held and it is the place where manufacturers meet with consumers and retailers.
