LJUBLJANA, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- A 50-year-old German kayaker drowned in the River Ucja in northwestern Slovenia on Wednesday afternoon after his kayak was sucked into a strong whirlpool, said the Slovenian Press Agency STA on Thursday.

The accident happened in the village of Zaga, near the confluence of the Ucja with the Soca, as the German was descending down the swollen river together with a 44-year-old friend in another kayak.

The younger kayaker was also sucked into the whirlpool but was able to swim out of it, said the Nova Gorica Police Administration in the region on Thursday.

According to the police, both Germans have been active kayakers for more than 30 years and used appropriate equipment for the kayak trip. However, the recent continuous rainfall in Slovenia has raised river water levels to unusual high.
