TOKYO, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed sharply higher Friday.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average surged 556.01 points, or 2.56 percent, from Thursday to close the day at 22,243.66.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, gained 26.71 points, or 1.64 percent, to finish at 1,658.76.

Shares recouped their losses from Thursday following investors offloading issues of firms reporting worse-than-expected earnings and as telecommunication issues dragged down the broader market due to potential price competition, local brokers said.

By the close of play, machinery, marine transportation, and glass and ceramic product-linked issues comprised those that gained the most, and rising issues beat falling ones by 1,495 to 561 on the First Section, while 55 ended the day unchanged.

On the main section on Friday, 1,818.12 million shares changed hands, rising from Thursday's volume of 1,782.49 million shares.

The turnover on the final trading day of the week came to 3,567.2 billion yen (31.63 billion U.S. dollars).
