TRIPOLI, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- The UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) on Sunday condemned attack of the western Libyan city of Sabratha by militias accused of smuggling migrants.

"UNSMIL condemns the attack on Sabratha and warns against further escalation," the mission said in a statement, adding that such move is "prohibited by the International Humanitarian Law."

According to local security sources, clashes erupted between government forces and militias on Sunday when the militias attacked the city and attempted to control it.

A few hours later, the government forces defeated the militias, killed four of them and injured and captured others.

The municipal council of Sabratha confirmed that the city is under control and that schools will reopen on Tuesday.

In October 2017, government forces announced takeover of Sabratha and defeat rival militias accusing of smuggling migrants after weeks of fighting.

Sabratha, located some 70 km west of the capital Tripoli, is considered a hotspot for migrants smuggling to Europe, according to international reports.
