TRIPOLI, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- The UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) on Monday condemned assaults on a local bank in the capital Tripoli by gunmen.

"UNSMIL condemns recurring assaults on the Aman Bank, alSiyahiya Branch Tripoli, by a gang led by Izzeddin al-Daw, Mohammed al-Daw and AbdelKarim al-Rammah," the Mission said in a statement.

"Physically attacking, harassing women and extorting them financially in return for bank services are immoral and illegal," the statement said.

On Thursday, the UNSMIL said that armed groups have been using force and intimidating public and private institutions in Tripoli recently with the aim of getting access to financial resources.

The mission demanded the gunmen to immediately cease the interference with the livelihood of Libyans, warning that the perpetrators must face criminal prosecution.

Libya has been suffering political division and insecurity ever since the fall of former leader Muammar Gaddafi's regime in 2011. Authorities struggle to impose their control in the country, as many armed groups operate independently.
