ADDIS ABABA, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- A grenade explosion has killed four people and injured two others in Ethiopia's northern Amhara regional state, state media outlet Amhara Massa Media Agency (AMMA) reported on Tuesday.

The blast happened on Saturday evening in North Gonder zone, Amhara regional state, when a group of individuals who had bought a grenade illegally started "playing" with it, which then exploded, leading to four deaths, reported AMMA.

AMMA further said the grenade accident left two other people severely injured, who were currently receiving medical treatment at a local hospital.

Ethiopia strictly controls licensing and movement of arms across the country and private arms ownership is relatively rare in the east African country.

Despite an increasing illicit trade in arms, deaths by modern weapons including firearms and grenades are relatively rare in Ethiopia.
