MAPUTO, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- Mozambique Electoral Commission and the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA) signed on Tuesday in Maputo, a memorandum of understanding for a 10 million U.S. dollars project sponsored by EU to manage electoral processes and help the country build its democracy for a period of five years.

"This will help in certain aspects such as strengthening of the civil society in monitoring electoral process, which is one of our weaknesses particularly during voting days and vote count," said Abdul Carimo, chairman of the National Electoral Commission.

Carimo added that the final goal is to assure elections results acceptance, because the commission can organize the best elections but if there is no acceptance of the results the entire work is compromised.

This project is announced on a time for the presidential and legislative elections that will be held in 2019, meant to avoid scenarios registered in the recent municipal elections where candidates contested the electoral results and filed appeals to the constitutional court.

EU Commission official Geert Anckaert said that the European Union highlighted Mozambique's commitment towards democracy and it is supporting credible elections in the country.
