OSLO, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- A German soldier died after being hit by a passenger car in Norway's central county Trondelag Friday night, local media reported Saturday.

"A military vehicle stood still on the road when a passenger car approached. The passenger car attempted a maneuver to avoid collision and hit the male soldier," Oystein Sagen from the Trondelag police department told news agency NTB.

"Life-saving first aid was given on-site, but the man's life could not be saved," he said.

The police are investigating the case and crime scene technicians have been on the spot, Aftenposten newspaper reported.

In past weeks, some 50,000 soldiers from 31 countries have been involved in the military exercise of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) held in Norway. The exercise has been the biggest since the end of the Cold War.
