6.5-magnitude earthquake registered near coast of Russia's Kamchatka

VLADIVOSTOK, Russia, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 was registered near the coast of Russia's far eastern Kamchatka peninsula, according to Kamchatka branch of the Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The quake occurred early Thursday morning local time. The epicenter was located in the Kamchatka Bay at a depth of 76.2 km, 78 km south of the village of Ust-Kamchatsk, a representative of the Russian Academy of Sciences said.

The earthquake was felt in several localities of the Kamchatka Territory. Several aftershocks took place afterwards.

Preliminary data showed that there were no casualties and destructions caused by the earthquake. The threat of a tsunami was not announced, according to the regional branch of Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations.
