BiH reports 37,628 traffic accidents with 298 deaths last year

SARAJEVO, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- On the occasion of the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims (WDR), Bosnia and Herzegovina's (BiH's) Automoto Club revealed on Sunday that 37,628 traffic accidents occurred in 2017 in BiH.

A total of 7,135 traffic accidents ended with 298 persons dead, out of whom 12 were children. A total of 30,493 traffic accidents ended with material damage on vehicles, according to BiH Automoto Club.

Altogether 10,299 people were injured, of whom 1,608 suffered severe injuries.

"Some 103 traffic accidents occurred on average every day on the territory of BiH in 2017, out of which some 20 traffic accidents with injured persons," the BiH Automoto Club report said.

Inadequate speed and speed unadjusted to conditions on road are one of the most common causes, amounting to some 32.7 percent. The second cause of accidents resulting from the effects of alcohol and other narcotics, and third is the disrespect of traffic signs.

When it comes to traffic accidents in urban cities, inappropriate speed and disrespect of distance between vehicles are the most common reasons of traffic accidents.

There were 1,915 fewer traffic accidents in 2017 than in 2016, a decline of 4.84 percent.

This year's topic is safer roads and mobility, with an aim to raise the safety and quality of road networks for the benefit of all road users, especially the most vulnerable.
