FARAH, Afghanistan, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- More than three dozen militants have been killed or injured as government forces have mounted pressure on Taliban fighters in Afghanistan's western province of Farah over the past 24 hours, provincial police spokesman Mohibullah Mohib said Monday.

According to Mohib, the government forces, backed by fighting aircrafts, launched offensives against Taliban positions in Khak-e-Safid district Sunday morning and since then the operations continued and the armed outfit has left 23 bodies behind and 20 others injured.

Government forces have also captured 25 more insurgents alive.

Taliban militants have not commented.

The operation took place in the wake of Taliban massive offensives on police security checkpoints in parts of the troubled Farah province couple of days ago which had left 70 security personnel dead.

Afghan Defense Ministry recently issued a directive to security forces to step up operations against anti-government militants.
