KUALA LUMPUR, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- Malaysian police on Tuesday shot dead five suspected robbers while a sixth suspect was captured after robbing a goldsmith shop inside a shopping complex.

Malaysia's state news agency Bernama quoted state Criminal Investigation Department chief Fadzil Ahmat as saying that four of the robbers were shot dead at the scene while one was shot dead about 1 km away after he fled in a car.

The remaining suspect had been wounded during the robbery and was arrested.

Fadzil said the six men had initially rushed into the hypermarket armed with pistols and machetes and charged straight to the goldsmith shop.

He added that a policeman was injured during the incident.

The police recovered two pistols and several machetes as well as a large quantity of jewellery and were conducting an investigation at the scene.

An eyewitness had described seeing several men wearing crash helmets dash into the goldsmith shop during the robbery.
