KAMPALA, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- Five primary school teachers were killed and three others critically injured in a Sunday road accident in the western Ugandan district of Rubirizi, a police spokesperson said Monday.

Marshal Tumusiime, Greater Bushenyi regional police spokesperson, told Xinhua by telephone that four people died on the spot while the fifth person died on the way to hospital.

The deadly accident occurred after a fast moving truck knocked a Toyota Noah in which the teachers were traveling at Rutoto village, along the Rubirizi-Ishaka-Kasese Highway.

Tumusiime said the teachers from Pearls Primary School in the western border town of Kasese were travelling back after attending a Open Day event at Pearls Junior School, their sister school in Bushenyi district on Saturday.

"The injured were rushed to KIU (Kampala International University) hospital for treatment while the bodies were taken for postmortem," said Tumusiime.

"We urge drivers not to over speed when they are moving on the road, avoid reckless driving and avoid drink driving," said Tumusiime.

Uganda registers about 20,000 accidents each year, with some 2,000 deaths, making it one of the countries with the highest road traffic death rates, according to police statistics.
