LASHKAR GAH, Afghanistan, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- More than a dozen civilians were among over 30 killed in airstrikes against armed militants in Garmsir district of Afghanistan's southern Helmand province on Tuesday, an official said on the condition of anonymity on Wednesday.

The official emphasized that the fighting aircrafts in the quest of Taliban militants targeted a house in Zanziri Darab area of Garmsir district late Tuesday night, killing 16 Taliban insurgents and more than a dozen civilians including women and children.

Helmand's provincial governor Mohammad Yasin Khan, when approached by Xinhua, confirmed the airstrikes, saying all those killed were anti-government militants.

However, the governor admitted that "civilians have also suffered" in the air raids in Garmsir district.

The governor added that investigation had been initiated to determine the fact about the airstrikes.

Neither the Afghan Defense Ministry nor the NATO-led Resolute Support mission has made comments on the alleged airstrikes on residential area in the troubled Helmand province.
