COLOMBO, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- A Sri Lankan court on Wednesday ordered the detention of one of the country's highest military officers in a probe into the abduction and disappearance of 11 youth during the country's civil war against Tamil Tiger rebels, local media reported.

The Fort Magistrate's Court ordered the detention of Chief of Defense Staff Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne until Dec. 5 after he surrendered to the court earlier in the day.

Wijegunaratne has been accused of giving refuge to a former navy Lieutenant Commander who is believed to be the main suspect in the abduction of the 11 youth from 2008 to 2009 at the final stages of the country's civil conflict between the government troops and Tamil Tiger rebels.

Police believe the 11 victims were murdered while in the illegal custody of the navy. Their bodies were never found.

The former navy Lieutenant commander who is the main suspect was arrested in August.
