KIEV, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Ukrainian parliament newspaper "Golos Ukrayiny" published on Wednesday a parliamentary decree, which said the next presidential elections in Ukraine will be held in accordance with schedule on March 31, 2019.

The parliament adopted the decree amid speculations that the martial law, which was imposed in certain Ukrainian regions, may lead to a postponement of the elections.

It is prohibited in Ukraine to hold elections when martial law is in place.

The martial law was introduced in ten Ukrainian regions at 2 p.m. local time (1200 GMT) on Nov. 26 for 30 days over tensions with Russia around the Kerch Strait.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko emphasized that "martial law does not mean the declaration of war," but a step toward strengthening Ukraine's defense.

Ukraine's presidential campaign is due to start on Dec. 31.
