KATHMANDU, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- United Nations Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women Dubravka Simonovic on Thursday urged the Nepali government to give priority to designing and implementing effective policies to eradicate violence against women in the country.

The UN special rapporteur made the remarks at a press conference in the Nepali capital following the conclusion of her 10-day visit to the Himalayan nation.

"During my visit, I found that the Nepalese society is beginning to openly acknowledge the levels of violence against women in the country," she said.

The UN special rapporteur argued that Nepal could accelerate the eradication of harmful practices to ensure gender equality and the right of women to live free from a life of violence if the government gives priority to designing and implementing effective policies on eradicating violence against women in cooperation with civil society.

Simonovic said she found the online violence against women and girls was an emerging issue in Nepal.

During her visit, the UN special rapporteur met various government officials and civil society members to inquire the situation of sexual and gender-based violence in the country.
