BRATISLAVA, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- Slovak Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajcak resigned on Thursday after the parliament adopted a resolution, asking the government to reject the UN Global Compact for Migration.
Lajcak tendered his resignation "in reaction on the resolution approved by Slovak parliament concerning the UN Global Compact for Migration", said Slovak Foreign Ministry spokesperson Boris Gandel.
According to the resolution, the Slovak government should take a disapproving stance towards the UN Global Compact for Migration.
It should also carry out relevant measures related to Slovakia's withdrawal from the process of adopting the document at a meeting of governments and high representatives to be held in Morocco on Dec. 10-11.
The resolution also states that the UN Global Compact for Migration isn't in line with Slovakia's current security and migration policy.
"Slovakia is fully sovereign in defining its own national migration policy," reads the resolution.
According to the document, economically motivated illegal migration is a negative phenomenon accompanied by security risks in a national, regional and global context. The resolution states that Slovakia supports resolving the causes of migration in the countries of origin.
