BRUSSELS, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- The Belgian police fired water-cannon and teargas in central Brussels on Friday to drive back protestors inspired by France's "yellow vest" anti-tax movement, Belgian local press reported.
Many of the protestors who have been walking the streets of Brussels in an unauthorized demonstration were masked and threw rocks, firecrackers and road signs at police who responded with high-pressure water jets and gas rounds.
The demonstration was largely promoted via social media and has severely affected mobility and traffic throughout the capital, reported Belgian newspaper L'Echo.
Around 60 protestors have already been arrested, said the spokesman of the Brussels-Ixelles police zone.
Protestors chanted slogans against the Belgian government, specifically demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Charles Michel because of a rise in fuel prices and a squeeze on living standards.
Police have subsequently deployed checkpoints around the neutral zone to help quell the situation and prevent the protestors from reaching central areas close to the Belgian Parliament and federal institutions.
