NEW DELHI, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- A 70-year-old woman was killed and 19 others were hospitalized Sunday after fire broke out inside a high-rise building in India's financial capital city of Mumbai, police said.

The fire broke out at 18-storey Samrat Ashoka building located on Keshavrao Khade Marg near Mahalaxmi Racecourse in south Mumbai.

"At least 96 residents were stranded in their flats due to the fire and smoke, who were rescued by firefighters. Unfortunately among the rescued Laxmibai Koli, a 70-year-old woman succumbed during treatment," said a police official.

Police said 19 people were admitted in the hospital.

"Many of the people rescued were taken to hospital but discharged immediately," the official said.

According to officials, the fire started in the electrical wiring inside a duct on the third floor and then spread to other floors.

The officials said it took several hours for firefighters to bring the fire under control.

Chances of fire in Indian buildings are usually high as people ignore safety standards.
