ZAGREB, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- Croatia has recorded the largest year-on-year drop in unemployment among the EU members, Croatian national television reported on Monday citing the latest European Statistical Office (Eurostat) survey.
In one year, it dropped two percentage points, from 10.2 percent in October 2017 to 8.1 percent in October 2018. Even with good progress, Croatia is still above the EU average and among the countries with the highest unemployment.
The average unemployment rate in the European Union in October 2018 was 6.7 percent. It is the lowest rate since January 2000 when Eurostat started a monthly survey on that issue.
Among EU members, the lowest unemployment rates are recorded in the Czech Republic (2.2 percent) and Germany (3.3 percent), while Greece (18.9 percent) and Spain (14.8 percent) have the highest.
According to the Croatian Employment Service, in October 2018, there were 141,762 unemployed people in the country, 56.5 percent of whom are women and 43.5 percent are men.
