TOKYO, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed lower Wednesday as an overnight rout on Wall Street sparked by a drop in long-term U.S. Treasury yields caused concern about a slowdown in the U.S. economy.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 116.72 points, or 0.53 percent, from Tuesday to close the day at 21,919.33.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 8.71 points, or 0.53 percent, to finish at 1,640.49.

Oil and coal product, securities house and insurance-linked issues comprised those that declined the most by the close of play.
