MOGADISHU, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations senior envoy in Somalia on Sunday called on the Horn of African nation to strengthen rule of law as part of efforts to fight corruption in the country.
Nicholas Haysom, United Nations secretary-general's special representative for Somalia, stressed the importance of building accountable and transparent institutions to fight corruption.
"Corruption and lack of transparency in the public and private spheres greatly impede development and stability," Haysom said in a statement issued in Mogadishu to mark International Anti-Corruption Day. "Like every other country, Somalia is not immune to these practices."
Haysom said each person takes action whether in big or small ways, to keep corruption in check and strengthen a culture of integrity.
"I want to particularly congratulate the Office of the Prime Minster for leading government efforts to tackle corruption," he said.
A key instrument to sustain, manage and track countries' fight against corruption is the United Nations Convention Against Corruption, which this year marks its 15th anniversary since being adopted by the United Nations General Assembly.
According to Haysom, although Somalia is one of a handful of countries yet to sign and ratify the convention, the United Nations is encouraged that steps are being taken toward this goal.
