LONDON, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- An area of Newcastle, a city in northeast England, was sealed by counter-terrorism police Tuesday after officers swooped on a house to an arrest a man.
Officers from Counter Terrorism Policing North East, supported by Northumbria Police, said the 33-year-old was arrested on suspicion of terrorism offences. He has been taken to a police station in West Yorkshire for questioning.
In a statement, police said the arrest was intelligence-led and pre-planned as part of an ongoing investigation by Counter Terrorism Policing North East.
The local Evening Chronicle newspaper said a part of the city's Arthur's Hill area was evacuated, while officers guarded Moorside Primary School. The newspaper said parents had been told they could collect their kids, but the children were safe inside the school.
Northumbria Police said residents will be kept as informed as possible.
