ATHENS, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- Greece's unemployment rate declined to 18.3 percent in the third quarter of 2018, from 19 percent in the second quarter this year and 20.2 percent in the third quarter of 2017, Hellenic statistical authority (ELSTAT) announced on Thursday.

The results of the latest labor force survey in Q3 this year showed that the number of employed in Greece amounted to 3,894,184 persons, while the number of unemployed amounted to 871,756 persons, according to ELSTAT's press release.

However, 626,000 people, or 71.8 percent of all registered unemployed have been unemployed long term over 12 months, the data showed.

The highest unemployment rates were noted in the categories of women (23.3 percent), youth aged 15-19 (44.3 percent), residents of northwest Greece (27.6 percent) and people who have not finished primary education (38.4 percent), according to the survey.

During the peak of the eight-year debt crisis in 2014, Greece's unemployment rate reached about 28 percent, a negative record for the country in many decades.

As the ailing economy gradually recovers in recent years, the jobless rates improve.
