CHICAGO, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- Students and staff at a middle school in the Midwestern U.S. state of Indiana are safe following a shooting Thursday morning that left a teen suspect dead, police said.

The suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and no other students were hurt during the shooting at Dennis Intermediate School in Richmond, which is about 60 miles (97 kilometers) east of state capital Indianapolis, according to Indiana State Police.

Law enforcement arrived on the scene quickly because they were notified that an armed person was heading to the school with the intention of hurting people.

"Officers responded rapidly. They did confront a suspect outside the school. Shots were exchanged, and the teen suspect decided to take his own life." state police police sergeant John Bowling told local media.

All Richmond community schools were placed on lockdown amid the threat. Students from the middle school were bused to Richmond High School for parents to pick them up.
