ABUJA, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday flagged off his campaign in a bid for re-election in presidential polls next February.

Buhari, who was recently accused of not being ready for a serious re-election campaign by the main opposition party, began his campaign in Uyo, capital of Akwa-Ibom State, in Nigeria's South South region.

The president told a crowd of supporters at the venue of the rally that he has delivered on his campaign promises of 2015, in spite of doubts by the opposition.

He said if re-elected the insecurity posed by the terror group Boko Haram would eventually be eradicated.

Noting that unemployment also remained a challenge in Nigeria, Buhari said his administration was working to tackle the problem.

The president said his administration would continue to fight corruption if voted into office for a second term in 2019.

Earlier this week, Buhari had said he would embark on an "aggressive campaign" for his re-election.

He said the campaign of the governing All Progressives Congress party was based fundamentally on three fundamental issues of enhancing the economy, ensuring security and fighting corruption.

There have been doubts over the 76-year-old's health and his fitness to govern Africa's biggest economy.
