NEW DELHI, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- A policeman was killed on Saturday after protesters threw stones on their contingent in northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, officials said.

The policemen were attacked in Ghazipur, about 339 km east of Lucknow, the capital city of Uttar Pradesh.

"This afternoon a contingent of police was attacked after they tried to evict demonstrators who had staged protest on the road. The protesters threw stones at the policemen during which a constable was hit by a stone and subsequently got killed," an official said.

The incident came two hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a rally in the area.

"The policemen were returning from duty at the prime minister's rally and were asked to intervene at a protest organised by members of a community demanding reservation," the official said.

The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced a compensation of 5,7286 U.S. dollars to the wife of the slain policeman and 1, 4322 U.S. dollars to his parents.

The chief minister, meanwhile, has asked the district magistrate and the senior superintendent of police to immediately take action and arrest the accused responsible for the killing of policeman.

This is the second killing of policemen in the state by mob.

On Dec. 3, a police officer was shot dead by a mob in Bulandshahr after violence broke out over allegations of cow slaughter. A civilian was also killed in the incident.
