MEXICO CITY, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- Five people, including an infant, died in a house fire on Saturday in Zapopan, a suburb town in Western Mexico.

According to the local fire department, the fire broke out at around 8 a.m. in the San Nicolas de los Belenes neighborhood, in Guadalajara, capital of western state Jalisco.

The victims were believed to be a couple, their two daughters and a granddaughter only several months old, Sergio Ramirez, of the department, told local media.

Firefighters recovered the bodies of the two adults on the ground floor, both dead from direct contact with the blaze, while the other three victims died on the second floor from smoke inhalation.

Neighbors reported hearing a blast immediately followed by a fire that may have originated in the kitchen, said Ramirez.

"Everything points to an accumulation of gas," he told reporters outside the home, adding that specialists did not determine the cause of the fire yet.

On Friday, six children and an adult died in a pre-dawn fire in Iztapalapa, a populous town within Mexico City's greater metropolitan area.
