PHNOM PENH, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- Six people were injured in a fire that ripped through the elevator of an 18-floor casino building in northwest Cambodia's border city late on Monday, a senior police official confirmed on Tuesday.

The blaze broke out at 9:30 p.m. local time at the Golden Casino in Banteay Meanchey province's Poipet city which borders Thailand, said Major General Ath Khem, police chief of Banteay Meanchey province.

The fire burst out at the casino's elevator and its surrounding areas, starting from the fourth floor and quickly spread to the 13th floor, he said, adding that firefighters took about an hour to put it out.

"No one died in the flames. However, six men got injured due to smoke inhalation while they got trapped in the lift," he told Xinhua.

He added that the victims had no physical injuries, but breathing difficulty only due to smoke inhalation and the police had sent them to a nearby hospital soon after they were rescued.

Ath Khem continued to say that all the people in the casino had been successfully evacuated from the casino through an emergency exit.

An electrical fault was blamed for the blaze, he said.
