KAMPALA, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- Ugandan police on Wednesday called for high public vigilance after a terror attack in the Kenyan capital that left 14 people dead and dozens of others injured.

Fred Enanga, a police spokesperson, said in a statement that the public should work closely with security agencies to prevent and defeat terrorism in the east African country.

At least 14 civilians were killed and several others injured after the deadly attack on a hotel and business complex in Nairobi on Tuesday. Somalia-based terror group al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the attack.

"We would like to urge the public that everyone has a role to play in confronting terrorism by remaining alert and report any concerns to the police," said Enanga.

"Although there are no specific threats to our country, we do reaffirm our commitment to tackling terrorism and have raised our security level of activities amidst wider range of interventions that will enable us to reduce further the risks to the public," he said.

"We are meanwhile working closely with our (Kenyan) counterparts to verify whether any Ugandan citizens could have been affected by the incident," said Enanga.

In 2010, al-Shabab launched twin bomb attacks in Ugandan capital, Kampala, that killed about 80 people and injured several others.
