BANGKOK, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- An Omura's whale was found dead on the coast of Thailand's southern province of Songkhla on Thursday, the second whale washed ashore in two days, according to the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources.

The department said the Marine and Coastal Resources Research and Development Center in the lower Gulf of Thailand reported that the 5.65-meter whale was found in Ra Not district.

Suthep Juealaong, director of the research and development centre, was quoted by Thai media as saying that the 1-year-old whale was being checked by authorities to find out the cause of its death.

He added it might have died when tropical storm Pabuk unleashed strong winds and turbulent waves on its path to the Thai Gulf early this month.

Suthep noted that it was the second whale found dead in the province in two days after another whale body of the same species was found on Wednesday in Muang district.

The previous one was also around one year old with a length of 5.9 meters and it had died for over 10 days when it was spotted on the shore.

Suthep believed that it might have starved to death after getting lost from its herd.
