MAPUTO, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi welcomed on Friday the election of Ossufo Momade for the main opposition Renamo's leadership and his committed effort to achieve an effective peace.

"I wish that we shall continue working on the full implementation of the memorandum of understanding on military matters, to achieve a sustainable peace to benefit all Mozambicans," said the president in a statement.

Ossufo Momade was elected the president of Renamo on Thursday. Since the death of Afonso Dhlakama in May 2018, Momade has been acting as the party's interim leader.

"Aware of that peace is one of the noblest values of the Mozambican people, we reaffirm our commitment until we achieve a definitive peace," said the statement.

During his speech as Renamo leader, Momade said the party doesn't want war, and promised the country and the world that they shall continue the dialogue with the government.
