TRIPOLI, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- Britain has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Wednesday to provide explosive detection equipment to Libya's Mitiga International Airport.
British ambassador to Libya Frank Baker, and the Head of the Libyan Airports Department, Mohamed Bait al-Mal, signed the MoU, said a statement issued by the Libyan airports authority.
"The signed MoU aims to establish joint cooperation between the Libyan Ministry of Transport and the British Ministry of Transport," said the statement.
The MoU also aims to enhance airport security by providing security equipment and training for the Libyan General Intelligence Service personnel, the statement added.
In 2014, violent clashes broke out in Tripoli between rival militias that led to complete destruction of the international airport in Tripoli. Mitiga is currently the only functioning airport in the capital.
In November 2018, the Libyan Ministry of Interior and British Crime Agency signed an MoU to train Libyan security personnel.
Last October, Libyan Prime Minister Fayez Serraj approved new security arrangements in Tripoli, which focus on forming joint police and army forces to secure the city.
