British Chinese Film Day held in London with focus on Chinese short films

LONDON, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- The "British Chinese Film Day" on Sunday night was held in London's British Film Institute, with focus on Chinese ethnicity filmmakers working in Britain and their productions on short films.

The event was also as part of the Filming East Festival 2019.

Five Filming East Shorts Award winners, featuring short films across drama, comedy, action, animation, and documentaries, were screened during the event.

The shortlisted filmmakers also shared with the audience their experience of working in the film industry in Britain.

In addition to the short films, three award-winning Chinese language films, namely "SUSU", "The Soul of Himalaya" and "The Fragile House", are also being screened during the festival from Jan. 27 to Jan. 31 in collaboration with Chinese Arts Now (CAN) to show the British audience the contemporary Chinese films from different angles, themes and artistic expression.

An-Ting Chang, the CEO of CAN, said that through the cooperation with the Filming East Festival, new opportunities of showcasing and communications will be created for Chinese filmmakers in Britain, who have been facing challenges.

Since 2007, Filming East Festival has been dedicated to showcasing excellent contemporary Chinese language films in Britain. So far, over 300 Chinese shorts and feature films have been screened, which have won certain amount of audience in the country, and thus facilitated cultural exchanges between Britain and China.

Yao Tu and Tilda Li, the festival programmers, said the festival has new breakthroughs this year as it focuses more on encouraging young Chinese filmmakers in Britain and followed the new trend of showing films completely using Chinese dialects.
