TOKYO, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- Volunteers working for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games were officially given the nickname "Field Cast" on Monday, local media reported.
Volunteer applicants voted for their nickname until Jan. 20 among four choices, among which "Field Cast" received 16,187 out of 37,739 votes, followed by "Shining Blue" with 10,328 votes.
The official nickname will be used by volunteers working at competition venues and the athletes' village.
City volunteers, recruited separately by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, were nicknamed "City Cast", who will offer help regarding transport and sightseeing information to spectators and tourists.
According to Olympic organizers, the nicknames aim at creating a sense of unity among volunteers. The organizers said they will try to make the nicknames well-known in the city.
The nicknaming tradition started at the London Games in 2012, with volunteers named as "Games Makers".
The Olympic organizers said last week that 204,680 people have registered to volunteer at the sports event.
The Tokyo Olympic Games will be held from July 24 to Aug. 9 in 2020, followed by the Paralympics from Aug. 25 to Sept. 6.
