KWALE, Kenya, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- Kenyan police confirmed Tuesday the arrest of 17 suspected al-Shabab recruits in Samburu township in the coastal Kwale County.

John Kemboi, Kinango police divisional police commander, said the police also recovered some documents from the two women and 15 men aged between 18 years and 27 years during the Sunday night raid.

Kemboi said the youths were from the coastal regions and they had completed secondary education but could not proceed to university due to lack of fees. Some of them are school dropouts.

Police believe they were al-Shabab recruits awaiting to be transported to Somalia. They have been at the holding area for almost a month.

The owner of the house is on the run, but the agent was arrested for questioning by the anti-terrorism police offices.

Kemboi said crucial documents seized from the raid would be helpful in the investigations.

The Kenyan authorities have warned over rising radicalization and its threats in the coastal region.

The arrest came amid enhanced security across the country after al-Shabab terror group on Jan. 15 attacked a business complex and hotel in Nairobi, killing 21 people injuring several others.
