LUSAKA, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- Zambian President Edgar Lungu on Tuesday called on people to pay artists handsomely when using their works.

Art was not only for entertainment but also a means of livelihood for artists and has become a big industry in some countries, said Lungu while receiving executive members of Zambia's National Arts Council at State House, his official residence and office.

The Zambian leader said he was proud of the work of artists as it brings wealth and jobs for the country.

He added the government's top agenda was to ensure job and wealth creation for citizens and that any industry contributing to the agenda deserves to be supported.

Lungu also expressed concerns over attacks some artists had been suffering for their artistic works in support of various political parties, saying that the trend was detrimental to the artists.

In the run-up to the 2016 Zambian general elections, Lungu enlisted some of the country's best musicians to compose songs for him, who also traveled with him throughout his campaign trail. Some musicians have become regular attendees at public events where Lungu has presided.
