KAMPALA, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- Uganda's tax body has impounded three trucks loaded with pieces of elephant tusks and pangolin scales at Elegu border post on the border with South Sudan.

Vincent Suruma, spokesperson of Uganda Revenue Authority, told Xinhua by telephone on Thursday that the consignment was from the Democratic Republic of Congo through South Sudan to Uganda.

"We used a non-intrusive cargo inspection scanner to arrest the items," Suruma said, noting that one of the trucks they had opened so far had 300 elephant tusks and pangolin scales.

"We have also arrested two people of Vietnamese origin who were transporting the said items. They had split some pieces of timber, hidden the tusks in there and used wax to re-seal the pieces," Suruma added, noting that the arrests were carried out on Tuesday.

He said they are yet to open the containers on the other two trucks.

"We believe the number of tusks in there could be more," Suruma said.

Ugandan authorities normally impound ivory at its border entry points.
