NEW YORK, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- The freezing weather caused by the polar vortex in the midwest United States expanded to New York State with snowfalls and strong wind gusts, killing at least three citizens in the state.

Two men in Buffalo died when clearing snow while a man in Livingston County died as his vehicle hit a snowdrift and crashed.

According to local authorities, a homeless man was found frozen in a bus shelter in Buffalo on Thursday. However, an autopsy was needed to confirm whether his death should be blamed on the weather.

The polar vortex descended on the United States on Tuesday, freezing much of the Midwest and New England region and affecting over 50 million people. Hundreds of schools and government departments are closed in the states hit by the vortex.
