YAOUNDE, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- At least 12 soldiers and one journalist were wounded Tuesday when gunmen attacked a convoy transporting the governor of Southwest, one of the two war-torn anglophone regions of Cameroon, according to local authorities.

"On a visit to Kumba, governor Okalia Bilai has been attacked by bullets from Ambazonians (armed separatists). Three soldiers have been seriously wounded," the army said in a statement.

Local authorities said the convoy was attacked when the governor was on his way to condole with families who were affected by a deadly hospital fire that killed four on Monday.

"The governor is not injured," an army official who asked not to be named told Xinhua.

The United Nations estimates that more than 430,000 people have been displaced internally since government forces started clashing with armed separatists in November 2017.

The separatists are fighting to secede from Cameroon and create a nation called "Ambazonia" in the two Anglophone regions of Northwest and Southwest.
