Helicopter crashes while fighting fires in New Zealand's south island

WELLINGTON, Feb. 17 (Xinhua) -- A helicopter involved in fighting bush fires near the Pigeon Valley of the South Island of New Zealand crashed at around 3 pm local time, according to Nelson Tasman Civil Defense sector.

The pilot survived and is receiving medical treatment for non-life threatening injuries, according to Roger Ball, the local Civil Defense Controller.
