SOFIA, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- Bulgarian customs officers at the Sofia Airport have seized 200 kilograms of critically endangered eels, Anguilla Anguilla, intended for export to Malaysia, officials said Tuesday.
The eels, approximately 7 to 8 centimeters long at their so-called "glass phase", were found alive in 90 styrofoam containers on Friday, the National Customs Agency said in a press release.
They were immediately delivered to the Rescue Center of the Varna Aquarium, the customs said.
Anguilla Anguilla are protected by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), the customs said.
