VILNIUS, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- The electric scooter sharing service will be launched in Vilnius this spring, Lithuanian capital's municipality announced on Monday.

"Scooters will play an important role as regards mobility in the city as there is a huge demand for moving at a speed that is faster than walking but slower than a car," Vilnius city mayor Remigijus Simasius was quoted as saying in a statement.

Five companies -- CityBee, Flash, MyScoote, Swop and Unicorn Scooters -- signed a memorandum with Vilnius municipality in order to introduce and develop the new service.

The scooter sharing service will operate on a basis of so-called free-floating system. While using mobile app, the users will be able to see on the map the locations of the free scooters and pick them up there, and afterwards leave them elsewhere.

Around 1,000 electric scooters will be available for sharing in Vilnius. According to the municipality's statement, fully charged scooter can make up to 45 kilometers distance and achieve speed up to 25 kilometers per hour.

Users of scooter-sharing service will have to be older than 18, the municipality said. The service is expected to be launched this April or May.

Car and bike-sharing services have already been introduced in Vilnius and other Lithuanian cities earlier.
